Del Sol Trash the Dress | Bat…
How much can I begin to say about the fun that we are having with our subjects. Our clients are escaping to a wonderful destination location and planning the wedding of their dreams. Why not dream a little more and go out on an exotic excursion to be photographed in the land of fairy tales? This is exactly what we are doing with our sessions and I often need to pinch myself.
Picture yourself in the middle of a muddy deep dark hole and bats are flying around, everywhere. Watch out, if you step in the wrong place, you will be up to your knees in quickmud and sinking fast. Oh, there are little round balls of bat poo everywhere... I am stepping on them with every step through this mud cave. Insert bride and groom in this non-friendly environment and you are slap in the middle of a del Sol TTD. It gets cleaner and eventually becomes a "Wash the Dress" session.
I've talked about one of our previous sessions before HERE and if you have seen that, you will see something familiar. We added a little color to the background again but this time, we used a mix between the amazing power of the video light and a red gelled flash flavor. The combo worked very well for the looooow light circumstances. I am hoping that my viewers can live vicariously through this session and help us keep the TTD phenomenon alive. You can do this by posting this TTD link in your blog. Show it to the world, tell a friend or neighbor about this insane video you watched. Del Sol is making a huge effort to keep an interest in the TTD session.
Many thanks to our friends Paul & Rachel at Playa Weddings for the awesome video work.
and this is the "scene setter" from the bat cave...
We we were getting stuck in some serious knee deep stuff in there... (shot courteous of Sol Tamargo)
Sol also snagged this killer frame. If you have been curious up to this point as to some specifics about our lighting, we would like to introduce you to the power of video lights. In ALL these frames, we are using a very inexpensive low wattage SONY Video light. Makes for some pretty sexy fill, eh?
100% Sol Tamargo...
and another one from Sol
Ambient light all over the background of the cave.... the sun was beaming into the cave producing this beautiful light quality that was being reflected all over the place by the ripples that we were causing by our movement through the water... her is an example of total ambient with a tad bit of low power flash flavor fill. In the video, you can see what I am talking about with ambient splashing everywhere.
This shot sets up the ambient beam of light that helping us with these frames...

OK, OK, OK, I've used red flash gel in the past to add some sauce to the frame... Well, I thought the flava was oh so nice.... Anyway, here is a set of images that we got recently while doing a little spelunking. Here are a few of my favorite photos... JUST an FYI. The del Sol studio has been undergoing a little brand development. Sorry for all the inconsistency... But you are beginning to see some of the results of our new face. This is our new blog template with the new logo. New blogs for Flashflavor and del Sol coming very very soon!

Again, the movie file at: www.delsolphotography.com/ttd/ttd2 Please, throw the link to this around to share the love. The more people (clients included) helps our worldwide efforts to keep the TTD thing going! Thoughts? We had some serious fun on this one. It is our hopes to perpetuate the TTD phenomenon for the next few years. We believe that fun times and exotic locations such as this continue to stir the imagination. Do you? Cheers! matt

Pure hotness! Keep up the good work!
Jesus, Adam, Shadi, Bull, Wendy, Berk & Becki... we appreciate that you took the time to check out our video and that you even commented here.
We are trying to change the whole concept of what is allowed on a photoshoot in regards to making "safe" photography happen... After all, safe can be SOOOO boring, no? Anyway, showing this stuff to other brides only inspires them to think outside the box. SUPER Thank you for showcasing this to others!
Cheers!
mateo y sol
Love the imagery. Thanks for sharing. I'm posting this on my blog and hope one of my southern brides will be up for a creative TTD session one day.
Very very cool shoot guys, I hated the idea of trash the dress, it seemed, well, trashy, but you have turned it into art, good one.
AMAZING images......the idea is absolutely brilliantly creative.... and looks like a LOT of fun and most certainly memory making!
Kudos for the concept and the end result is so worth it. Awesome.Shall most DEFINITELY pass the idea on to others!
what an awsome set, glad i got to veiw it
Dear Matt/Sol,
You guys definitely redefined wedding photography, the levels of creativity i see especially in TTD's shoots are inspiring. Thanks, really !
I do have a question and would like to gain from your experience; your photos, especially Sol's under natural light, are amazingly balanced with ambient, your colors also pop. can you share a tip on two how you expose for light in the challenging situations ? also how you achieve the eye-popping colors.
Your work is a fresh breeze of wedding photography , you took my skills to another level just by sharing your work. So thanks again.
Matt,
Love the shoot! Very hot very sexy, I am buying my tickets to Playa now.
I love seeing the videos, thanks for sharing them with us!
Adam
Yes, Sir!
Anything for a shoot.
I'm agree.
Being in that Cave , deep in bat guano, trying to stay balance, keep your gear safe, ... bride and groom there, expecting great photos...that was some pressure on!!, You have to find the right couple that is eager to go on adventure like that, but I guess that's the kind of clients we look for, like Matt and I, anything...for a shoot...
After being in that particular cave I told my self, I wouldn't go down on the bat guano again... (haha...) it's kind of gross..., BUT... I did... , we have another video comming soon!...
Wow. I have never seen anything like this.
Excellent, nice, beautiful, marvelous, incredible job!
Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations Sol & Matt.
You guys are great. You've given me inspiration to ask. you just never know what the answer will be. Go the ttd movement I am all for it.
Really just magnificent Photographs.
Your best work to date. BRAVO!!
Incredible work, very inspriational. How cold was the water?!
Absolutely amazing work. I LOVE the red gels...my absolute fav color!
I have been following your work for a while and it truely inspires me. This is just incredible stuff and right up my alley. I would love to be a part of one of your shoots...ever have guests or students? :) I grew up in Belize (not far from there) and honeymooned in Playa del Carmen 15yrs ago. That area is just gorgeous. Need t find some caves in FL to use.
Keep up the amazing work and inspiration.

Saw the echo over on strobist, love the shoot and the concept. The use of color was great!
Really interesting work. Particularly like the last shot with the back lighting of the couple - very dramatic, and very unusual.
Just an FYI,
I've been receiving a few negative comments, which I am totally ok with getting. Everybody has an opinion and we all know that nobody's perfect.
Unfortunately, we do not publish anything negative if you don't provide a working email address and website so you can show us how it is actually done.
Everybody will appreciate that.
Thanks again!
matt
Nice sizzle but no steak. Very theatrical. Some of the lighting is interesting and I am sure the shoot was a lot of fun, save slogging through all the bat guanno. Perhaps after four decades of professional photography I have become a bit cynical but one thing that time and experience teaches us is to "see." Stripping out the background location and studying the poses one sees some remarkably amazing shots here.
Matt,
Funnily enough, my question was partly inspired by the SB-800 that's currently in for repair and PocketWizard that came back unrepairable after an assistant dropped the both of them in the surf while were shooting on a beach at dawn...
Excellent work! thank you for sharing....
gives me inspiration and want to go there...
How many speedlights you guys normaly use to light the walls, the subject or overall.
Once again this is better than reality TV.
Joseca
Alan,
We typically show them videos like this. We send out an email blast to our current clients and say "hey, check out this insane adventure, anybody down" Typically, we get a good response. Plus, with 25 of these sessions this year, we can pick and choose them. More coming soon, for sure!
Eric, We are using Nikon SB-28's triggered by PW. I actually did some water testing on one while shooting in the ocean in the Dominican Republic... I tossed a PW mounted to the back of an SB-28 in the ocean (accident).... neither of those two pieces of electronic equipment responded well.
Leo,
Creative juices come from the love of what we do man...We love our clients too...
BECKY, good to see one of my clients posting here...yes, i deserve grief for not updating my wedding blog. We are redesigning them though, soon enough you will see a fresh new hot look!
Rob, Their apparel doesnt connect for a traditional wedding environment, but in the Riviera Maya, Grooms dress casual for weddings... One of the reason I LOVE my job. I like the formal environment less and less :) Check out the button up casual blue shirt this groom is wearing: http://www.soltamargo.com/blog/index.php?entry=entry071216-160227 :)
Thanks again for taking time to share your comments!
Cheers,
mateo
Super great photos!
I doubt I could even talk anyone into going in that cave.
I thought that same about that polo;)
I LOVEEEEEEEEEE YOU GUYS....CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU IN JUNE ! NOW UPDATE YOUR BLOG ! :)
Amazing shots in every way.
Only thing... Too bad you couldn't get the guy out of his golf shirt and into something slightly more exotic.
There's a disconnect between their apparel.
This is so awesome. I'm blown away with every post. Where do your creative juices come from?! I've been so wanting to get CTO gels for a while now but have no clue as to which brand, shade of color or power of gel to get since there are full, 1/2 and what not. Any suggestions?
What strobes are you using?
I've been looking for some good water-tight strobes for inclement weather and shallow-water work, and you guys seem to have found the right ones.
Absolutely amazing!
that's an amazing cave you found!
Unbelievable!
can't wait to see more exciting location!
Guys, I just have to say this is pretty extreme and Freakin Cool as it gets! How in the heck do you present a shoot like this to a client???? i mean i can only imagin the conversation...
Yeah so we'll be going down a hole in the earth to a sub domain inhabited by bats that will be randomly landing on you and we are gonna get some cool shots, lets head out!
anyway, very interesting.
We are very lucky to have found these awesome locations. In our free time, we explore the region for new and exciting spots. We also have clients who are very adventurous and want new ideas and are very lucky that their wallets can afford these crazy ideas :)
Philip, ISO on the 5d is around 1000-1600. LOW power flash to balance ambient here.
Much love,
mateo
Amazing. Simply amazing. thanks for sharing!
All I can say is DUDE!!!!!! Location, location, location!
The first one of these cave TTD sessions just blew me away & all I can say after this one is DAMN!!!! Outstanding work. Thanks for sharing the information and giving inspiration.
Tom
EXCELLENT WORK! Just wondering what ISO were you guys running during this shoot in the cave? The light has got to be pretty low. Thanks Alot.

Henrik
